West Virginia University seeks a laboratory animal Clinical Veterinarian who will work for the Office of Laboratory Animal Resources (OLAR) at WVU in Morgantown WV. OLAR provides animal care for all animals used in biomedical research at WVU.
West Virginia University is a land grant public institution with 303 undergraduate, graduate and professional programs and an enrollment of approximately 27,367 students including 6,200 professional and graduate students. The Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center includes the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and Nursing, Hospitals, the Eye Center, and the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center. The HSC vivarium has recently been renovated and expanded and can accommodate a variety of species and experimental procedures. Morgantown has a population of over 30,855 people and is consistently rated as one of the best small cities in the U.S., with affordable housing, excellent schools, a picturesque countryside, many outdoor recreational activities, and proximity to major cities, including Pittsburgh, PA and Washington, DC.
The Clinical Veterinarian will help administer an animal care and use program that is in regulatory compliance and exceeds USDA, OLAW, and AAALAC standards. This position will support training for research technicians, animal care staff, and research investigators, and will work closely with and supervise the OLAR veterinary technicians to provide state of the art veterinary care for research animals. The Clinical Veterinarian will provide IACUC protocol advice to PIs and research staff and will provide clinical and surgical support for research studies as appropriate. The Clinical Veterinarian will share rotating on-call duties with other WVU veterinarians and will help develop and maintain written and/or computerized records, SOPs, and policies regarding veterinary care and health surveillance programs and for regulatory compliance purposes.
Successful applicants at a minimum will hold a DVM/VMD degree from an AVMA accredited program or equivalent, and two (2) years of experience working with domestic, farm, and/or laboratory species. Current veterinary licensure in at least one state is required, with the expectation that WV licensure will be acquired within the first 6 months of employment. Post-doctoral training in laboratory animal medicine or equivalent experience is expected, and ACLAM board certification or eligibility is preferred. A valid driver’s license is required. Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to develop collegial relationships with researchers, are essential to this position.
